Meet Vincent van Gogh November Update

Retailtainment, Audio-Guides and Bringing the Experience to Lisbon

As we gear up to launch our upcoming tour stops in two of Europe’s most dynamic cultural capitals- London, UK and Lisbon, Portugal- the Van Gogh Museum’s Meet Vincent van Gogh Experience is moving into 2020 at top speed.

The Changing Face of Retail

With empty lots on the rise and footfall on the decline, the retail real estate industry is beginning to dance to the beat of millennials’ drums and reorient itself towards the creation of memorable ‘experiences.’ That’s why Van Gogh Museum experiential content took centre stage at MAPIC 2019 in early November. Meet Vincent van Gogh Experience General Manager, Arnold van de Water, presented at the conference’s Asia Forum in Cannes, France, alongside major retail real estate CEOs and developers.

MAPIC is an annual meeting of the international retail property market, leisure and visitor attractions leaders at Cannes’ beautiful Palais des Festivals. Diversification was the name of the game and arts and culture initiatives the solution. The Asia Forum was a valuable opportunity for Van de Water to share his insights on the power of the Van Gogh Museum’s authentic cultural brand, as well as the best practices of introducing experiential content into Asian markets.

“When creating cultural destinations in your retail environments, always opt in for the original and high quality IP. Authentic cultural IPs give you a seal of authority for your customers and competitors, as well as – in the case of Van Gogh – international PR value,” says Van de Water.

Van Gogh Museum Edition Pop-Up Continues its United States Tour

The Van Gogh Museum continually develops cutting-edge experiential concepts, based on the Museum’s extensive collection and research into Van Gogh’s life, that answer the call for immersive content in both the retail and arts and culture sectors. One of these concepts is the Van Gogh Museum Edition Pop-Up. The Pop-Up has been touring America’s premiere retail and leisure destinations since late 2018.

Now, Chicago residents and holiday visitors have the chance to explore an introduction to Vincent’s life and the Van Gogh Museum’s breath-taking Relievo Collection at the city’s Northbrook Court shopping centre. The Pop-Up’s Van Gogh Museum merchandise store comes just in time for Christmas, fully-stocked with branded products to suit all tastes and budgets. The Pop-Up will be on display until Sunday, 5 January 2020.

Introducing UAU, the Experience’s Partner in Lisbon

The Museum’s flagship experiential concept, the THEA award-winning Meet Vincent van Gogh Experience, will open its doors on Friday, 28 February 2020 in the historic area of Belém. Beloved by locals and tourists alike for its breath-taking panoramic views and national landmarks, Belém is the ideal location for Meet Vincent van Gogh to make its Portuguese debut. Luckily for us, we are collaborating with the ideal local partner, too: UAU Produtora.

UAU CEO and founder, Paulo Dias, is known internationally for making the impossible possible, and has spent over 30 years cultivating Lisbon’s vibrant arts scene. Meet Vincent and UAU’s relationship is built on Paulo’s genuine love of all things theatre, music and art. The Experience will join a lengthy list of blockbuster UAU productions, including Stomp and George Lucas’ Star Wars exhibition. We sat down with Paulo to discuss UAU’s history, why Lisbon is a strong market for the Experience and the elements that Paulo looks for in a show.

“Novelty, innovation, wide public appeal, high quality, family-friendliness and cultural and social relevance are the main factors I look for in a show,” says Paulo. “The Meet Vincent van Gogh Experience embodies all of these elements.”

The Innovation of Audio-Guides

While UAU is a relatively new partner of the Experience, RSF International has been with us since our launch in 2016. The world’s leading multimedia solution and audio-guide provider, RSF has nearly 40 years of experience helping Museums realise their most challenging projects. For the Van Gogh Museum, RSF’s Optima6 brought Vincent to life in the Experience and has since introduced this icon to audiences across Europe and Asia.

The Optima6 not only eliminates the operational and logistical challenges of production, but it also enables us to create a truly immersive visitor journey. The future looks bright as RSF announces the launch of its latest product, the Look Professional Android Multimedia Player.
